Video diary
Created during my Robert Fleming Artists Award Residency at Hospitalfield House, Arbroath, Scotland, ‘My days are like a shadow that declineth’ evolved from the recent death of my father and an acute awareness of time and mortality.
The imposing Hospitalfield House, left in trust for artists by its creator the architect Patrick Allan- Fraser and his wife Mary, has sundials carved into every wall. This turns the building into a graceful clock, highlighting ephemeris time. These sundials held a strange quality for me of being ‘in the moment’ and yet outside of it ‘in a timelessness’.
My father and I shared many things including the time of my birth and his death - 11:45am. During my residency I recorded the sundials ticking their shadows of time every morning at 11:45am. As the sun moves across the sky in the earth’s continual rotation, what returns will never actually return as the same but with change brings the possibility of transformation and new life. |
